Growing Dahlias

  • Wait for Warmth: Do not plant until the threat of frost has passed and soil temperatures reach at least 60°F (15°C). A common rule of thumb is to plant them at the same time you would plant tomatoes.
  • Full Sun: Select a site that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Well-Draining Soil: Dahlias are prone to rot in heavy, soggy soil. Amend clay soil with compost, aged manure, or sand to improve drainage.
  • Hole Depth: Dig a hole approximately 4 to 6 inches deep.
  • Orientation: Lay the tuber horizontally on its side with the "eye" (the small growth bud) pointing upward.
  • Spacing: Space tubers 12 to 24 inches apart, depending on the variety's mature size.
  • Staking: For tall varieties, place a sturdy stake in the hole at the time of planting to avoid piercing the tuber later.
  • Avoid Early Watering: This is the most common mistake. Do not water the tuber immediately after planting unless the soil is bone-dry. Tubers have no roots yet and are highly susceptible to rot if they sit in wet soil.
  • Wait for Sprouts: Only begin regular watering once you see green shoots emerge above the ground, usually 3 to 5 weeks after planting.
  • Pinching: When the plant is about 12 inches tall, snip off the top 3–4 inches of the center stem. This "pinching" encourages the plant to branch out, resulting in more flowers and a sturdier structure.
  • Fertilizing: Use a low-nitrogen fertilizer (such as 5-10-10) every 3–4 weeks once the plant is established. Too much nitrogen promotes lush green leaves but fewer blooms.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent blooms regularly to encourage the plant to continue producing new flowers until the first frost.
  • Shipping: All tubers will be shipped in Mid March-Mid April
